XempleX Professional Overview

XempleX Professional is a desktop application that provides a visual environment for users to design business, process and financial models. 

Where business rules and calculations would normally be hidden away in spreadsheet cell formulae, macros or database queries, using the XempleX language is more like drawing a flowchart.

From the most basic of data and calculations, to complex interactions between multiple data sources and web services, this language is extremely flexible and scaleable.

This environment has three major advantages over commonly used tools, such as spreadsheets or ad-hoc databases:

1. Auditability

Improvements in auditability are achieved in a number of ways.

• Business logic is displayed graphically (like a flowchart), making it easier to follow the logic.

• The graphical environment increases the visibility of calculations making it easier to see errors in calculations.

• The use of "named values" (i.e. giving an input a meaningful name rather than a cell reference or value) makes it easier to follow the logic flow within a model.

• The ability to create components (i.e. wrap up a calculation which can be re-used) reduces the complexity of viewing higher levels within a model, making it easier to follow.

• The ability to create components enforces discipline on the user so that they break their calculations down into manageable chunks of logic, which are much easier to audit.

• Components can be checked, certified and then locked to prevent changes, so that users can be confident that the calculations they contain are correct. This means that auditing becomes a matter of auditing the model for logic and flow rather than for calculation errors.

2. Maintainability

Models can easily be adapted to cater for changes in assumptions or business structures. XempleX is a highly agile tool. Changes are made by the user, not the IT department or the vendor.

3. Reusability

The intellectual effort sunk into models should be an asset for companies, not an expense. XempleX Professional provides an ideal mechanism for capturing intellectual capital. Calculations, processes or methodologies can be captured and converted into reusable components. These components, known as Xemplets, can be shared with other users and incorporated into new models as required.
